ARIA-nominated world music group Chaika will bring their unique genre-blending sounds to the Kunanyi Folk Club on March 7.
The Sydney-based six-piece, which melds earthy folk with jazz and classical, are including a stop at the KFC’s Fern Tree Tavern headquarters as part of a national concert and festival tour.
Chaika—which means “seagull” in several Slavic languages—were nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2019 ARIAs for their latest work, Arrow.
Reviews have been gushing, with The Australian describing the group as “enchanting” and Rhythms calling them “spine-tingling”.
“ARROW, as the title suggests, offers listeners a new direction in Australian Folk music, an innovative blend of beautifully crafted pieces,” said What’s on Sydney.
Like the seabird of their name, Chaika have traversed many lands to create their sound.
The band combines the harmonies of six vocalists with violin, guitar, clarinet, accordion, piano, bass and percussion to channel traditional rhythms and melodies into its label-defying sound.
Members have worked with the cream of Australia’s world music scene, including Nicky Bomba, Monsieur Camembert, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Mara! & the Martenitsa Choir and The Song Company on national and international stages.
Dinner bookings on 6239 1171.
