DEEP REVOLT Animation Workshop

Create your own animated artworks under the guidance of exhibiting artist Arlo Mountford. Using collage, charcoal and a smart device, the workshop will use simple animation principles, exploring how process and the passage of time can prompt unexpected and sometime humorous moving images

Held in conjunction with the exhibition 'DEEP REVOLT,' a survey of significant works by Melbourne-based artist Arlo Mountford. Spanning 15 years of the artist’s practice, from 2003 to 2018, Arlo Mountford’s large scale video installations, kinetic sculptures and animations take a wry look at the artistic canon, throwing light on visual art’s ongoing meaning and relevance in contemporary society.

A Goulburn Regional Art Gallery exhibition toured by Museums & Galleries of NSW. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australian Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
Arlo Mountford works primarily with large-scale interactive installations that integrate sound, video and animation. His digitally animated films feature a dizzying assortment of famous artists, iconic artworks and events from the history of art mixed with an almost equally generous array of pop culture references. Infused with humour and irony, Mountford’s work re-navigates art history, and explores the contextual relationship between contemporary art practice and its perceived past.

Arlo Mountford has a Bachelor of Fine Art (Sculpture) from Victorian College of the Arts and a Diploma of Fine Art (Design and Multimedia) from Western Australian College of Art. Working across video, sculpture and drawing, Mountford’s work has been on view at major Australian institutions and galleries, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Heide Museum of Modern Art, and Centre for Contemporary Photography.

Materials to bring:
Please note that this workshop requires participants to bring their own digital hand-held device (iPhone or Android phone/tablet) and to download the free app ‘Stop Motion Studio’ (available for Android and Apple) prior to the workshop.

Materials supplied:
• Charcoal
• A heavy GSM paper A3 or bigger. It is important the paper is thick and strong because the charcoal process requires a lot of erasing and rubbing in the same spot.
• Kneadable erasers
• Collage materials, eg. Coloured paper, magazines, posters etc.
• Scissors
• Blu-tac
• some extra lamps to help light the participant's animations are also useful
