Returning for its fifth year in 2021, the Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF) is set to celebrate women filmmakers and creatives from 17–24 February. Taking place in physical venues as well as online, the festival includes a mix of live-streamed or pre-recorded sessions - making the event accessible to audiences beyond Melbourne for the first time.

Kicking off the festival on 17 February at partner venue The Capitol – RMIT University will be Brazen Hussies. Ther highlights include The Weather Diaries and Ruahine: Stories in Her Skin. Melbourne Women in Film Festival will feature online sessions, as well as live screenings in line with COVIDSafe guidelines. Online screenings will include a short filmmaker introduction and some will feature pre-recorded Q&A’s as bonus content.

This year’s MWFF theme ‘More Than’ explores the future of women’s screen practice and storytelling. It considers future spaces for women working in the screen with a focus on alternative storytelling approaches, the uses of digital and online technologies in practice, and the need to reflect on the past as we envision the future both aesthetically and politically.

The eight-day festival comprises of online screenings as well as live events, featuring films, shorts and web series’ from diverse women filmmakers from across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Moana Oceania, as well as livestreamed panels, discussions and workshops. MWFF provides a platform for filmmakers from culturally diverse backgrounds, filmmakers with disability, and LGBTQIA+ filmmakers.
