Flicks After Fifty - Mini Women's Film Festival presented by Flesh after Fifty

Flicks after Fifty celebrates older women in their diversity, bringing together six films that resist and revisit assumptions about what women should look like, what they should wear, and how they should behave, especially as they age - Advanced Style, Gloria, The Song Keepers, Brazen Hussies, Hip Hop-eration and Morgana.

Note: Bookings required for all screenings, including the free program due to it being a smaller venue.

Visit the website to book/register.

Fri 26 March
6:00 pm - 7:15 pm Advanced Style (Lena Plioplyte, 2014, USA) - Free
Based on Ari Seth Cohen’s well-known blog of the same name, Advanced Style is a snapshot of the live sofa bunch of NYC’s most vivacious senior citizens. This is an antidote to our youth-obsessed culture, reminding us that age is no barrier to being chic.

Gloria is a 58-year-old divorcée and mother of two grown children. Craving adventure and human connection, she joins the singles scene in colourful Santiago where she spends her nights disco dancing through crowds of middle-aged single men.

Australia’s answer to The Buena Vista Social Club, an inspiring story of the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir. In the churches of remote Central Australia, a 140-year musical legacy of ancient Aboriginal languages, German sacred poetry and baroque music is being preserved by four generations of song women. Co-presented with the Melbourne Women in Film Festival.

7.40 pm – 9.40 pm Brazen Hussies (Catherine Dwyer, 2020, Australia) - $16 + B/fee
Meet the makers! Introductory remarks pre-screening. It was the mid-1960s and the demands of a few “brazen hussies” gave rise to a powerful social movement
for equality in Australia. Brazen Hussies traces a revolutionary chapter in our history.

Sun 28 March
6.00 pm – 7.35 pm Hip Hop-eration (Bryn Evans, 2014, New Zealand) - Free
Follow a dance troupe from Waiheke Island in their quest to perform at the World Hip-Hop Championships in Las Vegas. The twist? They’re all aged between 65 and 94! A celebration of living life to the fullest and a reminder that it’s never too late to learn how to twerk!

7.40 pm – 9.10 pm R18+ Morgana (Isabel Peppard & Josie Hess, 2019, Australia) $16 + B/fee
Meet the makers! Introductory remarks pre-screening. Morgana Muses was once an unhappy housewife in Albury. Now she’s a feminist pornography star. In this empowering documentary, Melbourne filmmakers celebrate Morgana’s wild ride of reinvention. Co-presented with the Melbourne Women in Film Festival.

Flesh After Fifty is an artistic examination of older women in art. Through the mediums of photography, video, sculpture, painting and prints the exhibition celebrates positive images of women over the age of 50 who have ‘lived a bit’ and have the bodies to prove it.
