Opening - The North Parmelia Primary School 50th Anniversary

North Parmelia Primary School (NPPS) is inviting the Kwinana and broader community to join them to launch the school's 50th Anniversary Project exhibition. Opening Friday, October 22. 1:30 - 2:30 pm at Carol Adams Lounge, Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre. Exhibition continues to November 7, 2021.

The North Parmelia Primary School 50th Anniversary Project is a body of work created by year 6 students with Artist in Residence Kaitlyn Elsegood. The project was motivated by 2020’s war on statues and the need for students’ to have a deeper understanding of the place that they call home.

For the opening, students will unveil 11 bold and bright wooden sculptures. Using the students' drawings and then scaled up, they acknowledge past and present individuals and places of significance of the local area.

These include an over 2m tall statue of long term Indigenous local Angus Walley, who spoke with students, and Mayor Carol Adams. Another statue depicts traditional owner Trevor Walley’s account of how Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound) was formed through a fight between the Waugal and the Yondock (Spirit Crocodile). Rebellious Women of Kwinana - Alice Dicker Lee, Margaret Feilman and Hannah Postans are depicted in another statue. An abstract piece celebrating Kwinana’s natural places of beauty - Chalk Hill, The Spectacles, The Beach and wildflower season has been created. Children also have acknowledged themselves and their role as future contributors to the Kwinana landscape with a joyful multifaceted piece with giant heads circling a 1.5m globe, to highlight the diversity of people who live in the area.

Other works on display include the children’s Kwinana Kreatures totem and abstract cardboard self portraits.
Join students, school staff and the broader community as we celebrate the students' hard work with dance performances and special guests including The Honourable Mayor, Carol Adams.
This opening and exhibition promises to be an like no other.
