The Terminator is perhaps the clearest example of an artificially stretched, tortured franchise. James Cameron created a cohesive and complete dilogy that didn't need a sequel, no prequel, or spin-off. Alas, after the collapse of the Carolco Pictures studio, the brand went from hand to hand, and each new owner tried to find a use for it. Judging by the ratings and fees, none of these attempts met with the approval of the audience.

Aside from a rather unexpected introduction, which I won't spoil, Dark Fate follows a familiar pattern from start to finish. This is again a compilation of two parts of the series, but if in the same "Rise of the Machines" this approach spoke about the failure of the creators, then here a conscious choice is noticeable. Before us is a kind of collection of the best hits, which is quite justifiably compared with "The Force Awakens." Although there is a more appropriate reference in the franchise itself - "Genesis". He, too, had to utilize the rich pop-cultural legacy of "The Terminator" and put pressure on nostalgia. But the authors of "Dark Fates", unlike the team of the previous picture, have taste, feeling and straight hands.

However, the film still has some kind of significance. It is unlikely that Cameron intended this (especially considering recent interviews), but Tim Miller did not play the role of the reanimator of the franchise, but rather the make-up artist in the morgue. After all that Genesis had done, he stitched up the gaping wounds, wiped off the dirt and powdered the bruises. Now "Terminator" at least looks like itself. Now you can say goodbye to him.
