There’s writing a story and there’s moving your body to music - but what if you could combine the two? That’s exactly what writer, dancer and interdisciplinary artist Adolfo Aranjuez does when creating ‘collisions’: multimodal artistic works that meld words and motion.

Join Adolfo in this online workshop that will equip you with tools and confidence to tell a story using both words and movement, following his process:

• conceptualisation (brainstorming ideas, determining the vibe, ‘finding’ the story)
• process (structure, selecting the best format, turning ideas into reality)
• choreography and responding to sound/music
• putting it all together.

But don’t be intimidated: this won’t be your traditional dance class where you have to memorise 20 sets of 8-count steps. Instead, you’ll be invited to reflect on how the verbal/textual, the musical and the kinaesthetic can work together, and to challenge your instinctual storytelling modes.

Please note: For ages 16-25. While this workshop is open to anyone ages 16-25 regardless of prior dance training or experience, participants are encouraged to evaluate their own level of fitness and ability to engage in movement-based activity.

Adolfo Aranjuez is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans essays, poetry and dance. His written work has been published widely, including in Meanjin, Right Now, The Lifted Brow, Cordite and Growing Up Queer in Australia, and he has choreographed and performed for ABC TV, Dance Massive, Federation Square, Midsumma, MOD. Museum and the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival, among others.

This workshop is part of the Becoming Us series exploring identity within the LGBTIQA+ youth community, inspired by the Immigration Museum’s new exhibition Becoming You: An Incomplete Guide. The exhibition celebrates coming-of-age moments through real-life stories from contributors including Adolfo Aranjuez, Andreja Pejic, Frances Cannon, Jax Jacki Brown, Karen from Finance, Noel Tovey and Nevo Zisin.
