Alexander Gadjiev - Sydney Piano Competition Winner

Italian-Slovenian born, Alexander Gadjiev grew up in a musical family with both his parents well-known piano teachers and musicians. The eclectic European culture of Gorizia, his city of origin, and a natural crossroads of peoples, cultures and languages, also had a strong influence on Alexander’s natural ability to absorb, process and rework, to his own taste, different musical styles and languages.

Studying piano with his father, Alexander made his concert debut at the age of nine, giving his first solo recital a year later. Alexander was awarded honours with his diploma at the age of seventeen and went on to participate in the Premio Venezia – a competition reserved for the best young talents in Italy, winning the 30th edition of the award.

Alexander received his Master’s degree at the Mozarteum of Salzburg, under the guidance of Pavel Gililov. Following his Master’s degree he took his Konzertexamen in Berlin under Eldar Nebolsin.

Alexander has played at prestigious piano festivals, including Verbier, the Rubinstein Festival in Łódź, the Chopin Festival in Duszniki, the ClaviCologne International Piano Festival in Düsseldorf, Piano Festival Rafael Orozco in Cordoba, the Ljubljana Festival, Bologna Festival, Settimane Musicali for the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, the Festival Animato de Paris, Ravenna Musica and the Kammermusik Salzburg Festival.

More recently, Alexander was selected for the 2019 – 2021 BBC New Generation Artists Scheme, which provided opportunities for him to perform in many of the major festivals and series in the UK, both in recital and as soloist with the BBC orchestras, and to record regularly for BBC Radio 3.

In demand as a soloist with orchestras, and as a recitalist, Alexander has also performed in the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Great Hall of Ljubljana’s Philharmonie, La Fenice in Venice and the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.

Fresh from his win at the prestigious 2021 Sydney International Online Piano Competition in Sydney, Alexander was awarded the Ernest Hutcheson First Prize and took home an additional six coveted prizes. Alexander is currently scheduled to play with Maestro Valery Gergiev, this December at the Mariinsky Piano Festival in St Petersburg, along with many other European and North American engagements, culminating in a national concert tour of Australia in the Spring of 2022, as part of his prize package.
