Art collectables that make a mark

For a short time only Art Marx Gallery in the historic west end of Fremantle is showcasing well known Australian art, plus a rare print by Pablo Picasso as part of the ‘Art Marx Gallery Collection’.

From Saturday 28th May to Sunday 5th June, Art Marx Gallery will be exhibiting collectable artworks from famous Australian artists such as Charles Blackman, Elizabeth Durack, John Olsen, Brett Whiteley, John Coburn, Emanuel Raft, John Wolseley, Robert Birch, Sieglinde Battley and more.
Stars of the exhibition include a rare print by Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous artists in the world. Another rare print from the ‘godfather’ of Art Deco – Erte, will also be available. Modern artists like Charles Blackman, Brett Whiteley, John Olsen and John Coburn are well know icons in our Australian culture.

Each of the pieces on display are part of the extraordinary life moments in these artists’ lives. They have come from private collections, making a rare appearance with some for sale.

The painting by Elizabeth Durack is an exceptional Western Australian historic post-war piece about returning to Broome after World War II and the threat of Japanese invasion in Broome and the north west of our State.

A letter by Elizabeth will be on display to provide context to this historical event, often forgotten about in our W.A history. Even the wood it was painted on has historical significance.

The print by Brett Whiteley was created when he was not known in Europe and part of a trip to London to establish himself in the U.K. John Coburn’s work includes part of the design for the tapestry in the Sydney Opera House. The piece by Erte, is towards the end of his life, capturing an incredible reflection of his life.

While some artists have passed on an left an incredible legacy, some are still practicing like Sieglinde Battley and Robert Birch. Their works can be found in National Galleries, international collections and many private collections around the globe.
