“My journey was not defined by my will, but by my willingness to work within the confines of what I was given.”

This body of work began as an examination of the flow of seasons, specifically in Australia, through nature. Cholich pursued this line of inquiry to feel more connected, by immersing herself in the language of the land.

Erika Cholich works in oil paint directly from life, primarily in the still-life and portraiture genres. She describes her practice of engaging with the subject as an important aspect of her creative process. She employs a combination of technical skill, with intuitive mark making, always searching for a balance of the known and the perceived. "It became impossible not to draw parallels between nature and humanity", explains Cholich.

This exhibition, is a celebration of Cholich's artistic journey over the last year-and-a-half.

Erika Cholich is a local Sydney artist who has been recent finalist in the 2022 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, the 2022 Burwood Art Prize, the 2021 Hawkesbury Art Prize and the 2019 Archibald Prize, at the Art Gallery of NSW. She is a regular finalist in Australian Art prizes, and winner of the “Traditional“ category in the Camden Art Prize and highly commended in the Burwood Art Prize.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio (USA), Cholich completed the Master of Arts in Art Education from Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Ohio (USA) and working in the studio of well recognised American artist, Shirley Aley Cambell.  She received the Eva L. Pancoast Memorial Fellowship for further studies which she undertook in Prague (Czech Republic) before living around the world and settling in Sydney.
