The Kopan Down-Under Retreat in 2022 will be based on Lama Tsongkhapa’s two texts Songs of Experience, and The Foundation of All Good Qualities, both widely used for condensed Lamrim meditation and considered some of the most important texts of the Gelug Tradition of Buddhism.

The Lamrim teachings, based on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, form a complete and gradual spiritual path leading to enlightenment. Through cultivating an awareness of our present situation, we gain an understanding of the nature of our dissatisfaction and unhappiness, the causes for these states of mind and how we can overcome them. The Lamrim teachings give us the tools to deal more effectively with any situation, be it positive or negative.

Our resident Tibetan Geshe, Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim, will teach this course, assisted by Venerable Kartson (interpreter and tutor) and other sangha members (Ven Tony and Ven Gonpo). The course consists of twice daily teachings from Geshe Tsultrim, daily tutorials and discussion groups, daily meditations and a meditation retreat weekend on the 8th and 9th Jan.

The course will cover many important topics such as the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the Four Noble Truths, Karma, The Nature of our Mind, Conventional and Ultimate Truth, Twelve Links of Dependent Origination and Bodhicitta, just to name a few.

The Annual Lamrim course at Chenrezig Institute began in 1974 in Diamond Valley with Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa. It was the first LamRim course that the Lamas taught outside of Kopan Monastery, Nepal. Since then the course has been held every year and has been attended by hundreds, if not thousands of people looking for meaning and happiness in their lives.

ABOUT TEACHER:
Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his professional translator, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm-hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma from within the Gompa, as well as by the example he sets outside of the Gompa.
