James Joyce's Ulysses, the literary sensation of modernity, turns 100 on 2 February 2022. Bloomsday in Melbourne (a dedicated James Joyce festival in operation since 1994) celebrates the occasion with a brand new play, Love's Bitter Mystery by Steve Carey. The play is a new, immersive theatrical experience, set in Paris and Dublin in 1903-4. How does a young nobody become the most lionized author of the twentieth century? Let us take you through the stately rooms of the spookily atmospheric Victorian mansion Villa Alba to witness love, death, sex and violence… and the two powerful women who made James Joyce.
The play is directed by Jennifer Sarah Dean (Australian Director of Moulin Rouge) and Associate Director, Carly Ellis.
For more details about the play, see Bloomsday in Melbourne's website.
