Japingka Gallery in Fremantle is very proud to present a Solo Exhibition of beautiful and evocative paintings of Country and Salt Lakes around Lake Grace by exciting Ballardong, Noongar artist Rohin Kickett. Rohin chose the title ‘Beautiful Dead’ for this Exhibition to reflect the great beauty of the inland salt lakes, especially when seen from the air, as opposed to the view at his feet where the salt and mud gave way to a world where nothing could grow or flourish.

Rohin says: ‘This body of work highlights the aerial beauty of the wheatbelt, while also experiencing the deathly state of what was once important life sources. By exploring country and documenting the current state of water sources, I realised a certain pattern left behind from harvesting, which has a similar aesthetic to the original mark marking methods and designs used by Nyoongar people to mark ceremonial shields. This reaffirms that Nyoongar culture is always embedded in country.'
