Spend the day with local artist Joolie Gibbs delving into the intricacies of portraiture to discover and reclaim your real identity and/or that of your classmates.

By looking at some well-known self-portrait artists and styles of portraiture, you will analyse and explore different facial aspects, while undertaking some up-close observations and personal reflections using drawing as the centre.

You will go home with a better understanding of yourself, warts and all, with a new confidence in handling the portrait.

Held in conjunction with the exhibition Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA), on view at the Gympie Regional Gallery from 3 December 2021 – 22 January 2022.

Materials
In keeping with Joolie’s sustainable approach to art making, you don’t need to buy anything new, but to bring materials you may already have. You don’t have to have all of these, but select something that gives good contrast.
• Your favourite drawing materials with a variety of weights (2B, 4B, 6B etc) pastel, charcoal, inks, graphite, rubbers especially a kneadable rubber, conte black and white, ruler.
• Assortment of brushes, pens, etc.
• A rag for wiping over graphite or charcoal.
• Paper to sketch on up to A3, but A4 is ok or sketch book at least 10 sheets. Coloured ground is also good e.g. pastel paper, brown paper.
• Better quality paper, maybe 1-2 for final work.
• Board to clip work to and clip to hold.
• Mirror(s). Double sided makeup mirror is good, and if anyone has a free-standing tall mirror. (Joolie does have some mirrors and boards)

About your tutor
Joolie Gibbs is a Queensland artist living in Gympie, where she is influenced in her subject matter by the natural environment.
From making the models for ‘tick, tock, what’s under the clock today’ for Playschool, tombstone art, graphic design, paste up artist, tutor, set design, community artist, desktop publisher, papermaking and basket making to Director of the Gympie Regional Gallery for 23 years, Joolie Gibbs brings a wealth of experience from a career spanning over 40 years in arts related industries.
Completing her Masters of Art in Fine Art (MAVA) at the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane, connected her once again with her own art practice, taking it in new directions.
Drawing is a strong part of her practice, and the starting point for everything. Joolie has been drawing the human figure since she was 18 years old, and portraits for just as long.
