Streaming killed the video store. And that’s not all we lost…

A unique performance combining real-time filmmaking and theatre comes to Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 August at 7.30pm.

Set in a ‘90s video rental store, Coil pays tribute to the glory days of the video store and the communities we made within them.

Blurring the boundaries of theatre and cinema, this innovative new work by re:group performance collective uses state-of-the-art video DJing technology to create an entire cast out of a solo performer on stage, as a film is recorded in front of your eyes and then screened at the end of the performance.

As the single performer play every character in the cinematic scene, the screen say there’s a connection between these characters whilst the theatre says he’s alone.

Coil reflects upon the joys, perils and pitfalls of nostalgia and how we grapple with goodbyes to move on. An immediate hit with critics and audiences, Coil is one of those rare productions: gobsmackingly clever in its execution whilst being funny, warm-hearted and deeply resonant.

Real-Time described the production as “astonishingly multi-layered, funny” and “a must-see live cinema event”, while Time Out declared that it was “genuinely impressive, clever and more than a little bold”.
