The film was directed by Chen Guoxing and starring Li Xuejian, Li Youbin and Chen Jin. After the founding of New China in 1949, the people became the masters of their own destinies, but the new regime was still in danger of being subverted by hostile forces overseas. Starting from nothing, the hard-working men and women with lofty ideals forged towards a common goal without internal experience and external support to develop atomic bomb in the vast desert. This film won 20th Chinese Film Golden Rooster Awards for the Best Feature Film and the Grand Jury Prize at the 7th Beijing Student Film Festival.
