How did Chinese migration to the goldfields of California, Australia and South Africa both upend the global economy and forge modern conceptions of race? Please come along to hear a discussion between Rebecca Kobrin and Mae Ngai about her new book, The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes, Chinese Migration, and Global Politics (2021).

Mae M. Ngai is Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and Professor of History, and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University.

Rebecca Kobrin is Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History at Columbia University.

Doors open 6pm.

Mae Ngai will be signing books available for purchase after the talk, which will be followed by a reception in the Macquarie Room.
