Presented by YIRRAMBOI and Melbourne Recital Centre in arrangement with Dirty Pearl Productions.

A stirring musical story of a young Torres Strait Islander and her quest for belonging.

Oh My God I’m Blak! is a special one-of-a-kind, one-woman cabaret show, brought to life by co-founding member of Ilbijerri Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Company, Maryanne Sam.

First commissioned by Melbourne Workers Theatre in 1995, and devised by Maryanne Sam, Patricia Cornelius and Irine Vela, Oh My God I’m Blak! is the personal story of Maryanne’s mother’s journey down to Melbourne from the Torres Strait Islands, the birth of Maryanne and her sister, their mother’s death and Maryanne’s journey to reclaim her culture and heritage.

Told through the eyes and ears of the character Menan, Menan embarks on a journey to trace her origins back to her mother’s Ailan home, finding connection through music and song; songs her mother taught her, songs from the Islands about departure, love, belonging, and formative and songs heard on the radio as a child.

This is an intimate and innovative musical exploration and celebration of First Nations creatives and storytellers not to be missed.
