"For their eleventh birthdays, my friends all got Barbies. I got a cue case."
The Australian debut of Linda Eisenstein's wry comedy/drama.
Set in a motel in Reno, Three the Hard Way is a comedy-drama that brings together three sisters, Kathleen, Irene and Mary after the sudden death of their colourful gambler father, Albert. Separated by geography and challenging family history, the sisters go through what little is left of their father's life and try to make sense of their past and their relationships with the meddling ghost of Albert looking on.
The first production by the Free Range Theatre Company, Three the Hard Way (1992) is an undiscovered gem of feminist theatre. It masterfully and wryly explores the impacts of childhood trauma; grief and loss on a family system; gambling addiction; and isolation, especially among older women. This hilarious and touching performance is not to be missed.
