What do a wellness guru peddling Gwyneth Paltrow’s piss, a teen doing the 40 hour famine twice in one week, and a socialite locking the doors to her party all have in common? They’re all tragic, and they’re all being played by Roxie Halley.

Roxie Halley’s debut solo character sketch show ‘Good Girl’ is premiering at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and will run at Theory Bar from April 10-14 and 17-21.

Off the back of her powerhouse 2023 MICF character show “Toni and Lyndelle: Pieces of Work”, Roxie has written her most ambitious work yet. It’s 13 women played by one actor, all of them grappling with different expectations put upon women – they’re all trying to be perfect and all failing miserably. Roxie states “there’s something so joyful and liberating about playing messy, cunning and tragic women – in fact, it’s my speciality.”

As a sought-after comedy film director, Roxie has worked with Australian legends such as Jane Turner, Tom Long and Magikarp Guy and, having directed commercials for global brands, she has a unique insider view into the messages the media sends to women. Roxie explains “the idea for the show came from understanding the manipulative tactics used in advertising, and how women internalise those messages, putting pressure on themselves to be perfect. The pressure can create utter monsters.” She goes on, “it’s really a love letter to womanhood, and how we’re all just trying our best under the circumstances.”

This show is for character comedy fans who think gender norms are dumb, for anyone that loves women, and for people trying to un-learn everything their mother taught them.

Directed by Taylor Griffiths – from YesYesYes at Comedy Republic and ‘No Thoughts’ at MICF 2023.
