Prints from Studio One: From the Collection of Basil Hall

Studio One Printmaking Workshop was a dynamic access and editioning studio in Kingston. It was founded by Dianne Fogwell and Meg Buchanan in 1982 and operated until 2000 under a number of Directors, including Basil Hall, who ran the studio from 1987-1996. During this exciting period numerous Canberra printmakers honed their craft, many following degrees at Canberra School of Art, but many more learning etching, lithography and relief printing for the first time as access users and class members. Studio One’s facilities complemented those at Megalo, where silkscreen printing equipment was available for access use. In addition to classes, school holiday programs and weekend workshops, Studio One also offered an editioning services to artists Australia-wide.

This exhibition, drawn from Basil Hall’s boxes of Printer’s Proofs and mementoes, includes prints by Mandy Martin, Jorg Schmeisser, Paul Peisley, George Gittoes, Raymond Arnold, Garry Shead, Pamela Challis, Bob Russell, GW Bot, Chris Denton, Dianne Fogwell, Julie Bradley, Sylvia and Tony Convey and many, many more!

Join Master Printer Basil Hall for an introduction to his collected Printer’s Proofs produced during his years at Studio One Printmaking Workshop in Kingston. Hear stories about the works created with some of Canberra and Australia’s most celebrated artists. Then break for a cuppa and continue the conversations more informally in the gallery surrounded by wonderful prints.

About the Artist:

Basil Hall is based in Canberra and has been running workshops and teaching since he graduated in Printmaking from the ANU in 1986. He has worked as a university lecturer and has been the Director of printmaking workshops in Canberra and Darwin. In 1995 he received a Churchill Fellowship to travel & study at printmaking studios in Europe and USA.

He has worked extensively in aboriginal communities for 30 years and has editioned prints for hundreds of artists. By arrangement, he works regularly with groups of 4-5 in his studio. By invitation, he teaches Australia-wide. By inclination, he takes artists to his shared studio on Skopelos Island in Greece.
