A musical exploration of gendered violence and the immigrant experience. At once whimsical and raw, this original theatre piece is a breathtakingly honest portrayal that sheds a light on the intrinsically flawed versions of ourselves that we cling to.
A Fundamentally Flawed Love Story (AFFLS) is presented by BreakBoundaries, a production group that creates original content focusing on the prevention of gendered violence, with a specific focus on the culturally and linguistically diverse community. It was formed in 2018 by 4 diverse individuals: Thelma (Brazil), Sean (Malaysia), Jesse (Australia) and Jun Bin (Malaysia). AFFLS is produced by Sean and is part of Melbourne Fringe Festival 2019. The musical is directed and composed by Jun Bin, an internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been featured at Fringe Festivals all over the world.
The idea for AFFLS originated from “Change the Story”, an online educational video about prevention of domestic violence produced by Our Watch, an organization that seeks to drive nationwide change in order to end domestic violence in Australia. Conversations surrounding gendered violence have come to the forefront of the collective conscious in recent years and AFFLS looks to the future, focusing on prevention, specifically within the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community. By bringing these issues to light we can actively and deliberately look for ways to heal our communities and in doing so heal ourselves.
