In this busy, frenetic, information-overloaded, device-driven world, have you ever wondered is it possible to find peace and contentment? Join the Ballarat School of Philosophy, to explore some practical, everyday tools to increase peace and contentment in your life. A series of sessions and workshops that showcase some of these practical ways of increasing our peace and contentment.

Keynote Speaker:

Mankind and Modern Technology: masters of the universe or driven to distraction? (9:30 to 10:30am)

Most new technologies, like IT and social media, promise the world and are welcomed with open arms and unquestioning and unbridled enthusiasm, but are we really becoming more connected, happy, and confident masters of the universe? It is often some time before the downside of the misuse of technology becomes apparent. With relation to excessive screen time, social media and gaming, these problems include addiction, distraction, poor mental health, unhealthy lifestyle, social isolation and poor performance academically and professionally. This interactive presentation will explore these modern maladies as well as some much needed remedies such as mindfulness.

Morning Tea 10:30am–11:00am

Session 2 - Choice of one of four workshops (11am to 12noon)

Workshop 1 - Peace Through Plato
Plato was very much aware of the challenges that human beings face in their endeavour to find peace and contentment. Join this highly interactive session to discuss Plato’s take on pleasure and pain, measure and harmony.

Workshop 2 - Calligraphy - An Exercise in Mindfulness
Watch in wonder as wet ink flows off the tip of your pen. You will be guided through a series of exercises to learn the foundations of a simple calligraphy script. No prior experience in calligraphy is required, just a willingness to connect your attention to the senses. Calligraphy has been described akin to a contemplative practice. Surely a recipe for peace and contentment! All materials will be provided.

Workshop 3 - Peace and Contentment through the Senses.
Philosophers such as Eckhart Tolle, Lao Tzu and Kahlil Gibran have all great insight into how to understand ourselves and our needs. Come explore the senses and find that peace and contentment.

Workshop 4 - Like all great treasure hunters in antiquity, philosophers are in search of the holy grail of peace and contentment. Is that the Enneagram?

Lunch 12:00 noon–12:45pm

Session 3 - What Now? (12:45 to 1:30pm)
After a day of looking at stillness and attention, how can we incorporate these more into our everyday lives? An interactive session that encourages participants to ask questions about the day and investigate how we can incorporate it into their lives.

Cost includes morning tea and lunch.
