DuOuD, Bashka, Lewis Florez Duo

Jean-Pierre Smadja (AKA SMADJ) and Mehdi Haddab (Speed Caravan) as DuOud are the first band to mix the North African oud with electronic technology and they do it with such imaginative freedom that it sets them apart from their contemporaries. ‘Respectfully insolent’ of the oud tradition, this phenomenal duo experiments with classical Arab tunes, original compositions and the warmth of the acoustic instrument, alongside electronic break beats, jazz grooves and metal guitar.

Corner Hotel will be their last stop after their WOMADelaide and Sydney shows as part of their 2019 Australian tour. Melbourne based electronic world hiphop band Bashka will also take the stage supporting their international friends from France.

Their live performances are energised with a truly new sound combined with the delicacy of traditional Turkish instruments and master players. Live samples and loops merge seamlessly with ancient acoustic and modern western instruments to create music which brings to life old folk songs, gypsy ballads and dance music from the dirt streets of old Turkey.

Lewis Florez Duo will open the night with the fire of Flamenco, the passionate Latin rhythms and smoothness of Jazz from two guitars engaged in improvised conversations. With over 25 years of playing experience, Alejandro Florez and Brandon Lewis present a unique and inventive duo in the tradition of Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin, performers of genuine distinction.
