Born in a small village in Japan, Montz started to learn Bluegrass banjo from the age of 15.
In 1987 he joined the legendary Japanese folk group The Natarshar Seven. Moving to Australia, Montz has played at major festivals around Australia including performing every year from 2016 to 2017 at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Locally he is a regular of Mona, Cygnet Folk Festival and the Taste of Tasmania.
