Exploring the intersection of one young man’s identities as gay, queer, hard-of-hearing and deaf, Sam Martin’s powerful autobiographical one-man show takes us on a journey of coming out in two worlds during the 2017 marriage equality plebiscite.
Looking back on his experience and self-identity with new insight and clarity, Sam’s stories draw upon his rawest coming-of-age moments—being closeted during the debate, coming out, finding first love, his years of speech pathology, hearing devices and ultimately finding confidence and pride in who he is.
In development with director Dan Graham and award-winning producer Andrew Lee, Sam I Am is being presented for two nights only supported by the Flying Nun at Brand X program. Equal parts humour, honesty and hope, Sam I Am is a rare insight into the experience of a deaf millennial during one of Australia’s most divisive and painful periods of social progress.
Tickets are strictly limited to this very first opportunity to see the work in-progress before a future season.
Sam I Am proudly champions diverse artists, creatives and their stories. Dan, a neurodiverse gay-identifying man, is a highly-recognised theatre Director and Disability Arts Advocate, who has worked both nationally and internationally. Sam, a film student at AFTRS, is a Hard of Hearing gay-identifying man and a recent Auslan user. Both have a passion for disability and queer representation in the arts.
