Boost your grainpower! Whole grains are an important part of a balanced diet, providing us with carbohydrates for energy and good thyroid metabolism plus minerals and B vitamins for overall health. Many people who find modern grain products difficult to digest can handle and enjoy grains when they are properly prepared. Proper preparation pre-digests gluten and starch as well as increasing mineral absorption.
In this 3-hour hands-on workshop you will learn how easy it is to prepare and enjoy delicious, traditional grain-based foods to nourish yourself and your family.
On the day you will learn:
Presentation
- A brief science and history behind grains, nutritional benefits and cooking techniques
- Discover different ancient and whole grains
- The ingenious methods of grain preparation our ancestors devised in order to extract the maximum nutrition and flavour from the grains
Hands on experience:
- This is a major part of the workshop where you will have to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty in our kitchen
- Ancient methods of grain preparation like soaking, sprouting, sour-leavening, and fermentation
- Prepare and sample four dishes that feature a different grain using different preparation techniques
- Prepare sourdough bread starter and learn how to care for it
- Make sourdough pita bread from scratch using sourdough starter (sourdough pita bread is a great nutritional alternative to a loaf of bread and easy to prepare)
- You will also have the opportunity to see, feel, smell and taste a range of grain based dishes
You will leave this workshop with:
- A new appreciation of the health benefits of ancient and whole grains if prepared properly
- Knowledge and practical experience how to prepare grains in your kitchen
- Full recipes, instructions and how to's
- Sourdough bread starter and fermented rice starter and instruction how to care for it
