A farmer (George O’Brien) and his loving wife (Janet Gaylor) live a simple country life that is ripped apart when the farmer becomes besotted by a glamorous temptress from the city (Margaret Livingston) German director F.W. Murnau was invited to Hollywood and given complete creative freedom to make Sunrise. Filmed right at the end of the silent film era, this allegorical tale of good and evil is ranked in the top 5 films made in the history of motion pictures in the BFI’s 2012 critics’ poll.
