The Scott van Gemert Big Band returns to the Jazzlab with special guest vocalist Merinda Dias-Jayasinha!

Lead by young writer and trombonist Scott van Gemert, the SvGBB showcases his unique and innovative compositional style and features some of Melbourne’s best improvising and session musicians and young rising stars on the scene.

This special performance will celebrate the art of song, featuring new original music from Scott and Merinda, as well a diverse mix of songs from the likes of Crowded House, Andrea Keller and more classic Great American Songbook repertoire.

Rapidly establishing himself as a composer and arranger on the rise, Scott van Gemert has written works for the Australian Youth Orchestra, Victorian State Schools’ Spectacular Orchestra, ATM15 Big Band as well as being selected as the Composer in Residence for the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra for 2019.

For the Generations in Jazz Festival in 2016, Scott was commissioned to write for a double big band of the University of North Texas 'One O'Clock Lab Band' and the JMA Jazz Orchestra together with featured soloists Wycliffe Gordon, Troy Roberts, Ross Irwin and James Morrison. In the following year his arrangement of '(Back Home Again in) Indiana' was chosen as the Division 1 Set Piece for the festival.

Scott has now returned to his home town of Melbourne after graduating from the James Morrison Academy of Music in Mount Gambier (SA) in 2018, having studied with the likes of Wycliffe Gordon (US), Mat Jodrell, Angela Davis and James himself.

“Scott van Gemert’s artistic voice is not only clear, it’s remarkable. One of the most talented and unique large ensemble composers in the country right now.” - Ross Irwin (The Cat Empire, The Bamboos) 2016
