Belonging: how does our distribution across the globe - our diaspora - inform our contemporary Australian reality? Inspired by this delightfully unique phenomena, James Nguyen, moderator and Swinburne Associate Professor Carolyn Barnes, Sangeeta Sandrasegar and Melbourne-based artist John Young will detail the way diaspora has informed their interpretation of reality and their artistic vision in the Diaspora, Psyche: Discussion Panel on Saturday 14 August. John Young is one of Australia’s most senior Asian-Australian artists who’s work has been exhibited throughout the world. James Nguyen is a Gertrude Contemporary studio artist who uses short-form documentaries, sculpture and experimental collaborations to create conversations about epistemic refusal, the diasporic absurd and risk. Santa Sandrasegar draws on her childhood to inform her artistic vision which explores the relationship between migrant communities and homelands. Associate Professor Carolyn Barnes has been widely published on the subjects of Australian non-objective art and artist initiated activity. Guests are invited to join this outstanding live panel discussion which will work to develop your knowledge on the impact of diaspora and the way it has been beautifully involved in the impeccable work of artists in Australia.
