Girmit Diwas 2021

GOPIO Queensland Inc, on an annual basis, pays tribute to the first Indians to arrive in Fiji on 14th May, 1879. Under the British rule of India, many colonies were established worldwide. It was said that the sun never set on the British empire. After the abolition of slavery, a new semi-slavery method known as Indenture Labour was introduced. It was under this system that Indians were taken to many of the British colonies including Fiji. This memorial service pays tribute to those heroic Indians who made that journey.
