Crying Chair Theatre will present a double-bill of two stellar Australian works, Yielding and Big Horn, at Marrickville’s Flight Path Theatre from 26th May to 6th June.

Written by Matilda Award-winning playwright Emma Workman, Yielding follows Dot, once bold, strong and in control of her life. Since her stroke, though still strong in mind, her body betrays her daily. Liz, Dot’s middle-aged daughter, is solely responsible for her mother’s care and has sacrificed her own career and ambitions for the exhausting battle of appointments, pills, bills, chores and repeated demands to help her mother. Both Dot and Liz are struggling to hear and be heard, to see and be seen. Their world shrinks inwards as each month passes, leaving Dot dancing on the edge of the decision to set them both free.

Directed by Richard Cotter (Confessions of Jeremy Perfect, ABC’s Rake), Yielding stars Tricia Youlden (Bondi Theatre Company’s Bondi Legal) and Emma Dalton (Sutherland Theatre Company’s Bloom), with lighting and sound by Jacinta Frizelle, set design by Allan Walpole and music by sodacake.

Taking an empathetic look at love, loss, sexual politics and ageism, Big Horn is a poignant story of one man’s determination to hold onto his home and his past. Ray Bold has lost his wife and son. But he never lost his fighting spirit, and he’s bloody determined not to move out of his home. Daughter-in- law Cate has to convince this wily old codger to move, before the government resumes his property.

Written by Paul Rogers (New Theatre’s Page 7 Bottom Left), Big Horn is directed by Tricia Youlden, featuring Richard Cotter taking on a performing role, with Emma Dalton, Mel Day (The Hope Song, Marbles) and Eloise Martin-Jones (New Theatre’s Neighbourhood Watch and Consensual).
