Tasmanian artist Gemma Lynch-Memory’s new exhibition uses nautical themes to reflect a world lost at sea and our collective opportunity to steer a different course.
With a professional career spanning over 25 years and 34 solo exhibitions across Australia, Gemma Lynch-Memory’s work has consistently converted art lovers and collectors into lifelong devotees. Lynch-Memory’s trademark colour chords, detailed mark-making and gestural iconography embody contemporary abstraction. With decades to hone her artistic practice, the works are confident large-scale pieces that project her compositional and technical ability.
“Recent events have me contemplating the concepts of freedom, loss, the idea of what we can and can’t control and ultimately and how that can lead to new personal insight”, explains Gemma. “Are we our ship’s captain or just at the mercy of the storm and the tides?. The vulnerability of the moment made me contemplate that perhaps the most extraordinary journeys can actually only start once we are lost and adrift. I wanted this new work to be a tactile reflection of reality and possibility.”
This new exhibition is yet another opportunity for the artist to use her compelling aesthetic and veiled narrative powers to further add to her growing account of fervant fans and collectors.
‘Adrift’ opens at the TAG Art Gallery in Murray Street Hobart on the 25th of November.
