This sublime bamboo flute duo by Murali Ramakrishnan and Darshil Shah serves as an urgent reminder of the need for sustainability, the first step toward which is clearing the clutter in our minds. The bamboo flute, one of the earliest musical instruments of humankind, is used all over the world and occupies a special place culturally, musically, and spiritually in the music of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Ramakrishnan and Shah’s performance will showcase some of the cross-cultural aspects of the music of the Indian sub-continent. The bamboo itself is a symbol of sustainability, and the serene music it produces helps calm the turbulent mind.

Murali Ramakrishnan is one of Australia’s most versatile Indian classical music flautists, trained in both the South Indian Carnatic and the North Indian Hindustani music styles. He has performed extensively in Australia and abroad, including accompanying classical dance performances, and composing and recording for TV. He is also the author of a popular online course on Jazz Improvisation through Indian Ragas.

Darshil Shah’s roots and core interest are based in exploring Hindustani (North Indian) Classical Ragas, but also has extensive experience playing for Live Kathak Dance Shows, Yoga, Devotional (Bhajan), Meditation, Jazz, Ghazal, Bollywood and World Music collaborations.

They will be joined onstage by Shen Flindell on tabla and Rudra Dorairajan on mridangam.

BEMAC Unplugged is a series of shows that recreate the intimate vibe of BEMAC’s shows at Yungaba, showcasing diverse talent and inviting cross-cultural collaboration. For more information about BEMAC’s program of upcoming events, visit bemac.org.au/whats-on/
