'MAY 1998' explores the May 1998 Riots in Indonesia. May 1998 is a period generally celebrated - it was a period of protests and student activism which culminated in the end of President Suharto's 32 year regime.
It is also a period of great tragedy and atrocity. The Riots were a series of lootings, burnings, and violence which disproportionately affected the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia. One of the greatest atrocities were the mass rapes of Chinese-Indonesian women.
In 'MAY' we remember the riots through the memory of "I", an Indonesian woman, who, 25 years later, still struggles to cope with the trauma of what happened. "I" constructs and reconstructs her very identity as she sifts through past and present, travelling through anecdotes of family history, and fragments of what happened on the days of the riots.
