Mahler famously wrote that a symphony must be “like the world” and embrace everything.

His First Symphony realises that bold ambition. This is an evocative masterpiece, drawn with celebrated skill by our Chief Conductor Simone Young. Her passion and depth of experience will immerse you in the vast world of this symphony, where Mahler shifts between panoramic and personal, filling every space in between. Birds soar high above the sounds of alpine horns with valleys, forests and bustling villages below.

It’s a spellbinding experience from the first note to the thrilling finish. Following the critical success of our performances of Mahler’s Second Symphony in 2022, this concert makes an inspired opening for 2023.

Be transfixed by Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg in Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées, arranged by Australian composer Brett Dean. Described by The Age as having “an ethereal stage presence and impossibly beautiful voice”, this is a brilliant moment to experience Siobhan Stagg in the Concert Hall.
