The Man From Atlantis and Adam Hipwell

the Man from Atlantis and Adam Hipwell present an evening of psych-folk raga and electro-guitar kosmische experiments at the Tramway. This is a free event.

The man from Atlantis is the moniker for Melbourne musician and Ramble Records owner Mike Sill. Mike started 90s experimental noise, prog-rock, art-punk outfit Ray of Creation in the early 90s and went on to form krautrock duo Imperial Leatherman in 2000. the Man from Atlantis and its various iterations is an extension of ideas formed in his previous bands and sonically traverses somewhere between American Primitive finger-style guitar and raga, blues, no wave, outsider/acid folk/psych.

In 2023 TMFA released Blues for Archie Shepp (included in The Third Eye’s best Psychedelic Rock Albums of July 2023) and Golden Light. Both releases epitomised the outsider psych and sonic experimentation that has become a common thread at Ramble Records.

Recent live shows have incorporated both elements of light and shade (acoustic guitar, Weissenborn and electric guitar with effects and loops) and highlight gentleness and fragility as well as a heavier more experimental element.

Adam Hipwell’s musical journey has been one of continuous exploration and evolution. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, he began his musical endeavours in the post-post-punk group Wunderlust, developing a fascination for creating music that transcends traditional boundaries. Additionally, he has been a long time member of the primitive instrumental collective known as Council of Elders.

His creativity has continued to flourish under the name of ‘Hipwell’ embarking on a personal and introspective musical voyage encouraging listeners towards a profound and contemplative centre. In 2022 he released the album ‘Gardenworld’ through Island House Recordings (NY) which is an expression of inner thoughts and perspectives, manifesting as a simultaneous zoom in and pan out of his artistic universe.
