Although Western Australia produces less than 10 per cent of Australia’s wines, this makes up around 20 per cent of the premium wines made by Australia’s winemakers.

In the main Western Australia’s wine producers are small family run companies that are now moving into their second and third generation.

The focus of the State’s winemakers is on producing high quality wines on a smaller scale than some of the bigger volumes being made in other States. This concentration on quality is one of the reasons the wines have been so successful within Australia and in other countries which recognise the quality of the wines.

WA’s wine producers have been able to hone their viticulture and winemaking to continue to raise the quality bar to a level of consistency that has not been seen in the entire history of the State’s wine industry, based on the excellence of the vintages.

There are nine separate sub-regions—Margaret River, the Great Southern, The Swan Valley, Georgraphe, Peel, Manjimup, Pemberton, Blackwood and the Perth Hills—with each making distinctive wines that show the influence of the region and climate on the styles of wines being made.

Both red and white wines are very good. Of the reds, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot are world class, while in the white wines, the chardonnays rival those from Burgundy in France, the Rieslings are excellent and the distinctive sauvignon blanc and Semillon blend important.
