2019 Rebetiko Festival: The surge of the underground

Rebetiko (Greek Blues) is urban improvised music melding Byzantine, Turkish, Greek, Sephardic, Jazz, and other forms.

Rebetiko musical and cultural expression are linked to song and dance that spread among the urban working-class populations in Smyrna (Izmir) and Constantinople (Istanbul) around the turn of the 20th Century. It found its home in the ports of Athens and Thessaloniki after the expulsion of Greeks from Modern Turkey in the 1920s.

Rebetiko pays homage to the past and reflects a modern Greece with new diverse musical influences.

Direct from Greece, Rebetien showcases its authentic Rebetiko sound and will be supported by international and local Rebetiko artists. The full program will be announced in January 2019.

Supported by The Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, Greek Festival of Sydney, Victorian Multicultural Commission & Neos Kosmos Media & Kape Communications.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Melbourne Rebetiko Festival
