She is Vigilante is a collection of short plays about women who stand up, rebel and kick ass. The works have been sourced from new and emerging women writers; and developed and performed by a community-based ensemble of untrained performers.

The plays that make up She is Vigilante are:

You May Not Rest Now, There are Monsters Nearby, Chanella Macri – A woman is in custody for the abduction of seven children from the ruling class. The evidence connecting her to the crimes is minimal; she seems to be a scapegoat and at the hands of police brutality. The woman is compassionate, sincere and frightened. She is adamant they have arrested the wrong person. They haven’t.

Vigil_ant_e, Ivana Brehas – Three vignettes exploring rape culture, misogyny, and female anger, in which we watch a word evolve and change its meaning, from “vigil” into “vigilant” and finally “vigilante”.

Athena, Huntress of Men, Lauren Anderson & Meegan May – Violence against women is skyrocketing. Police valiantly advise women to look out for each other. In an effort to beat down the rising death toll, one woman will fight her dark past while kicking nasty-man ass in a pleather mask.

Kyirony 360, Roshelle Fong – A mixed-media performance drawing inspiration from the life of Ani Pachen, Tibetan Warrior Nun. VR artist/programmer Vivien Wong has created a VR pathway for Tibetan refugees to return home as their own avatars.

Robot Coupe, Maja Amanita – A satirical series of adverts for domestic appliances used by women in self defence, performed between each of the other works.

Directed by Krystalla Pearce and Bridget Balodis, She is Vigilante answers a call for female representation, both on stage and off. It is a reminder that women can be scary, women can be powerful, that women are furious and that we are sharpening our knives.
