As part of Melbourne Recital Centre and the Peninsula Summer Music Festival’s commitment to nurturing the development of exceptional young artists, this year’s festival will again feature the winner of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition held in September 2019.

Now in its tenth year, this important national competition provides a platform for young musicians and ensembles passionate about the immense Romantic repertoire, including such luminaries as Brahms, Liszt and Schumann.

This year’s winner, Carol Wang started playing the bassoon from the age of nine, and she later studied under Professor Zhaolu Liu, Principal Bassoon with Shanghai Symphony and Bassoon Professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Since moving from China to New Zealand in 2010, Carol has received numerous national and international accolades for her solo performance, including 1st Prize of MRC Great Romantic Competition 2019 and 1st Prize of Australian Youth Classical Music Competition 2019, Pettman National Junior Academy of Music Scholarship, and several prizes in the Australian and New Zealand Double Reeds Competition.

Carol's concert will feature works by Villa-Lobos, P. Dubios, CM von Weber and CPE Bach.

The Great Romantics Competition is supported by Annamila Pty Ltd, Mrs Margaret S. Ross AM & Dr Ian C Ross.
