Internationally renowned pianist and scholar Danaë Killian is a celebrated exponent of the music of the Second Viennese School. In this recital, Danaë will bring her deep insight and virtuosity to the great solo piano works of Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg.

Danaë writes, "What I love about playing Schoenberg is that his piano music calls on expressive pianistic capacities that, to my perception, are distinctly speech-like in character: every tone, within the transparently illumined, knottily expressionist texture of Schoenberg's piano music, is saturated with precise and individual significance -- and has, therefore, the persuasive communicative power of a word. Through Schoenberg, I learn to speak with my hands an abstract yet visceral language, which sometimes seems infinitely richer and more varied than prose or poetry that can be mouthed in actual words."

Dr Danaë Killian is a Melbourne-based pianist whose poetry-infused expressionist performances are known for their intense originality and interpretive power. Her repertoire ranges across the complete solo piano music of the Second Viennese School, major polyphonic works by JS Bach, and a wealth of Australian compositions.
