Warwick Freeman

Warwick Freeman is a largely self-taught jeweler. Born in Nelson in 1953 he took up jewellery-making in Perth, Australia, in the early-1970s. Atfer moving back to New Zealand he set up a studio in Nelson, before moving to Auckland in 1975.

In the 1980s, as a prominent member of the jewellery co-operative, Fingers, he revolutionised contemporary jewellery practice in New Zealand. His work is renowned for possessing 'an air of distilled simplicity' and his use of natural materials such as bone, stone and shell.

In 2002 he received a New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate Award. That same year he was awarded the Françoise van den Bosch Prize in recognition of his or her oeuvre.
